GFDA Releases Opportunities in Pulse Processing for the State of Montana Market Assessment Findings

Montana is the nation’s top producer of dry peas, lentils, and chickpeas, yet most of this production leaves the state in raw, unprocessed form. We are pleased to release a statewide market assessment that explores opportunities to expand pulse processing capacity in Montana.

The assessment, conducted by Agralytica, finds that Montana’s strongest opportunity is in expanding upstream and midstream capacity — particularly food-grade cleaning, sorting, toll processing, and milling.
Increasing and diversifying food, ag and bio processing is one of the strategic priorities in our Economic Development Strategy. Processing operations create manufacturing jobs, indirect jobs that support manufacturing, and tax base. They also create new local market opportunities for farmers and ranchers that can diversify risk and generate more revenue.
The project was funded by the Montana Pulse Crop Committee, paid for with Pulse Check Off Dollars. Thank you, producers!
Many thanks to the Montana Department of Agriculture, the Montana Food and Ag Development Center Network, the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, and others who helped with the market assessment.
We’re eager to put the assessment’s findings to work!
